What is the best country to hire a virtual assistant from?
There is no single best country, only a best fit for the work. Here is what each market is genuinely good at, what it costs, and the comparison mistake that makes most of these decisions wrong.

What is the best country to hire a virtual assistant from?
The Philippines for client-facing English and general admin. India or Pakistan for the lowest rates and for technical or e-commerce work. Latin America or the Caribbean when live US-hours phone work matters most. There is no single best country, only a best fit for the task.
We staff from Pakistan, so treat that as a stated interest rather than a neutral view. It also means we are not going to pretend the Philippines is not the incumbent in this category, because it is, and for a large share of VA work it remains the right answer.
How much does a virtual assistant cost by country?
Publicly reported 2026 ranges put the Philippines at roughly $4-12/hr, India at $4-8, Pakistan at $4-7, Latin America at $8-30, Caribbean nearshore at $12-22 all-in, and a US in-house hire at $28-48 fully loaded.
| Market | Reported hourly range | Strongest at |
|---|---|---|
| Philippines | $4-12 | Client-facing English, general admin |
| India | $4-8 | Technical and data work, breadth of skills |
| Pakistan | $4-7 | E-commerce and Amazon marketplace work |
| Latin America | $8-30 | Spanish and Portuguese, US hours |
| Caribbean nearshore | $12-22 all-in | Native-English phone work in US hours |
| US in-house | $28-48 loaded | Licensed or onsite work |
Ranges are publicly reported figures as of August 2026 and vary by seniority and provider. Confirm current rates directly before budgeting.
The mistake almost everyone makes here is comparing a direct-hire wage against an all-in managed rate as though they were the same purchase. A $6 hourly wage buys you a person. A $15 all-in rate buys a person plus recruiting, training, supervision, QA, equipment and replacement cover. The second number looks worse and often costs less once you count the hours you spend on the first.
For reference, our own rate is a flat $395/mo for a full-service VA, with all of that included. See full pricing.
Philippines vs Pakistan vs India vs Latin America
At the base rate the Philippines, India and Pakistan sit within a dollar or two of each other, so cost rarely decides between them. Language, specialism and time zone do. Latin America and the Caribbean cost meaningfully more and buy you live US-hours coverage.
Philippines
The default choice, and usually the right one for executive assistance, customer support and anything a client will read or hear. It has the deepest VA-specific talent pool, a strong culture of long-tenure remote work, and a structural advantage in neutral written and spoken English. It is not the cheapest, and it is not where you go for marketplace or technical depth.
India
The widest range of skills at a low rate, and the strongest option when the work drifts technical: data processing, reporting, research at volume, back-office operations. Quality variance is high because the market is enormous, which puts more weight on how a provider vets rather than on the country itself.
Pakistan
Comparable rates to India, with unusual concentration in e-commerce and Amazon marketplace work and one of the largest freelance workforces in the world. Working hours overlap UK business hours naturally and cover US mornings with a shift. This is where we staff from, and marketplace operations is the area where we would argue the market is genuinely underrated.
Latin America and the Caribbean
The premium option, and worth it under specific conditions: you need Spanish or Portuguese, or you need someone on the phone during US business hours with real-time coaching. Caribbean nearshore in particular is priced all-in rather than as a bare wage, which is part of why the headline number looks higher.
The fuller version of this time zone argument, applied to sales roles, is on offshore vs nearshore SDR.
Does time zone matter when hiring a virtual assistant?
It matters for anything conversational and barely at all for anything asynchronous. Live phone work, real-time coordination and same-day turnarounds need overlap. Inbox triage, research, reporting and data work do not, and paying a nearshore premium for overlap you will not use is waste.
Be careful with the word "overlap" though, because it hides a distinction. Natural overlap means the person is working their own daytime while you work yours. Shift overlap means they are working your hours from a distant time zone. Both can work, but only one is sustainable without high turnover, and providers rarely volunteer which they are running.
Our own VAs work live during UK or US business hours with real-time Slack access rather than overnight handoffs, and that shift is contractual rather than best-effort. Ask any provider the same question directly.
What should you check before hiring a VA offshore?
Six things, in this order: how they vet, who supervises the work, what happens when someone underperforms or leaves, whether the time zone commitment is contractual, who carries payroll and compliance, and what the security arrangement is for your data.
- Vetting method - a live task in the actual tools beats a CV review and a friendly call. Ask what the pass rate is.
- Supervision - if nobody reviews the work but you, the rate is not the real cost. Ask who reviews it and how often.
- Replacement - what happens on day 40 when it is not working. Ask whether replacement is free, how fast, and who absorbs retraining.
- Time zone commitment - written into the engagement, or a best-effort promise. Ask what happens on a public holiday that is not shared.
- Payroll and compliance - who is the legal employer, and who carries the risk if that is ever tested.
- Security - NDAs, device control and access protocols, especially if the VA will touch customer data or inboxes.
Any provider worth hiring answers all six without hesitation. Hesitation on the third and fourth is the most common tell.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Philippines still the best country for VAs?
For most client-facing and general admin work, yes. It has the deepest VA-specific talent pool and a structural advantage in neutral English. It is not the cheapest, and it is not the strongest choice for technical or marketplace work.
How do I check English fluency before hiring?
Have a live unscripted conversation, then give a short written task with no AI assistance and a tight deadline. Written and spoken fluency come apart more often than people expect, and a recorded interview alone will not catch it.
Should I hire direct or through a managed provider?
Direct is cheaper per hour and you carry recruiting, training, supervision, cover and replacement yourself. Managed costs more per hour with those included. If you have a manager with real spare capacity, hire direct. If you do not, you are buying yourself a second job. See our VA service.
How many hours a week should I start a VA on?
Start with the smallest scope that produces something you can judge, and expand once the working rhythm is set. Handing over a large, vaguely defined remit in week one is the most reliable way to conclude that offshore does not work.
