AI SDR vs human SDR: which actually books meetings?

AI SDRs are strong at the top of the funnel and weak in the middle of it. Here is what each one really does, what the tools actually cost, and the setup most teams end up with.

What is an AI SDR?

An AI SDR is software that automates the prospecting work a sales development rep does: building and enriching lists, writing personalised first-touch emails, and running sequences on a schedule. It is a tool that operates a workflow, not a person who owns an outcome.

That distinction drives everything else on this page. A tool executes the instructions it was given. A rep notices that the instructions were wrong. Most disappointment with AI SDR products traces back to buying the first and expecting the second.

The category also covers a wide range. Some products are sequencing tools with better copy generation. Others claim to run the whole motion autonomously. The gap between those two things is much larger than the marketing suggests.

What can an AI SDR actually do well?

Volume work with clear rules. Sourcing and enriching lists, matching accounts against an ICP, drafting personalised first-touch copy at a scale no human matches, and firing sequences on schedule. If a task is repetitive, rule-based and happens before anyone replies, AI does it well.

Specifically, the parts worth automating:

  • List building and enrichment - pulling accounts and contacts from multiple sources and filling in the gaps, faster and more cheaply than a person clicking through profiles.
  • ICP matching at scale - reading a company's site and positioning to judge fit, across thousands of accounts, without fatigue.
  • First-touch personalisation - writing an opening line that references something real about the prospect, on every record rather than the first fifty.
  • Sequence execution - sending, following up and stopping on reply, exactly on schedule, every day.

This is genuinely valuable work, and it is the majority of the hours in a traditional SDR week. That is the real argument for the category.

Where do AI SDRs fail?

After the first reply. Objection handling, reading intent that contradicts the literal words, deciding whether a lukewarm response is worth pursuing, and knowing when to stop. Unattended AI also sends volume without judgement, which is how sending domains get burned.

The failure is rarely dramatic. It looks like a prospect writing "interesting, but not right now" and getting a cheerful booking link in return. Or a competitor's employee being sequenced for three weeks. Or a warm inbound account being cold-emailed as though nobody had ever spoken to them.

Each of those is a small thing. Together they are the difference between a channel that compounds and one that quietly poisons your domain and your brand. Reply handling is where the judgement lives, and judgement is exactly what the tooling does not have.

There is a second-order cost too. Sending reputation is built slowly and lost quickly, and recovering a burned domain takes weeks of warming you cannot shortcut. See cold email deliverability for what that actually involves.

Is an AI SDR cheaper than a human SDR?

Often not. Published pricing runs from roughly $300/mo for entry tools to $5,000/mo and up at the enterprise end. Regie.ai lists $180 per user per month on annual terms, Artisan starts around $1,500/mo, and 11x starts at $36,000 a year.

AI figures are publicly stated or widely reported as of August 2026 and change often. Several vendors quote custom pricing, and implementation fees can push first-year cost well above the headline. Confirm current terms directly.

The headline comparison is unflattering for AI at the enterprise end. A tool at $36,000 a year against a supervised human at roughly $9,000-12,600 a year is not a close contest on price alone, and the tool still needs someone to run it.

At the entry tier the maths flips. A $300/mo tool operated by someone who already works for you is cheaper than any headcount. That is the honest case for AI, and it is a good one.

Should you use an AI SDR or a human SDR?

Use AI tooling to multiply an operator, not to replace one. If you have someone to run it, AI raises their ceiling substantially. If you do not, you have bought a machine with nobody at the controls, and the output lands in spam folders rather than calendars.

Choose AI tooling if you already have a person who owns outbound and is bottlenecked on list building, research and first-draft copy. That is the exact bottleneck the category solves, and solving it is worth real money.

Choose a human SDR if nobody owns outbound today. Buying software to fill a headcount gap gives you a tool that no one operates, which produces volume without qualification. That is worse than doing nothing, because it costs you your domain as well as your budget.

Choose both if you can. The strongest setup we see is one rep with a properly built data and automation layer underneath them. That is what a GTM engineer builds, and it is why we staff the two roles as a pair rather than selling reps in isolation.

Our own position is not neutral, so read it accordingly: we sell supervised human reps at $15/hr, and we build the automation layer they run on. We do not sell an AI SDR product. What we do believe, from running outbound as our own business, is that the reply is where deals are won or lost, and nobody has automated the reply yet.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI replace an SDR entirely?

No. AI handles sourcing, enrichment, personalisation at volume and first-touch sequencing well. Objection handling, reading intent that contradicts the words, judging whether a lukewarm reply is worth pursuing, and knowing when to stop all still need a person.

Do AI SDRs hurt email deliverability?

They can, when run unattended. The risk is not the AI writing badly, it is volume sent without judgement. Sending reputation is built slowly and lost quickly, so keep send volume tied to someone watching reply quality. See cold email deliverability.

What is the best setup for a small team?

One person owning outbound, with AI tooling doing list building, enrichment and first-draft personalisation underneath them. That person handles every reply. It costs less than most enterprise AI contracts and keeps a judgement layer between your domain and your prospects.

How do I evaluate an AI SDR vendor?

Ask what happens after a reply, what the total first-year cost is including implementation, and whether the contract is annual. Then ask who on your team will operate it daily. If the answer is nobody, the evaluation is already finished.
